KUCHING, May 10 (Bernama) — The Sarawak Teachers Union (STU) has proposed a comprehensive review of caning in schools to include caning for girl students.

Its president William Ghani Bina said it was unfair that boy students be subjected to caning while the girls only had to clean toilets and gather litter for committing the same offences.

“Caning can help arrest the deteriorating indiscipline among girl students as some of them acted like gangsters.

“However, the girls must only be caned on the palm and not other parts of the body. Caning must be applicable only for secondary, not primary school students,” he told Bernama here today.

Ghani said caning girls was relevant as indiscipline and social problems caused by students particularly ‘tomboys’ have reached alarming level.

Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said yesterday caning would be re-introduced in schools to arrest indiscipline among students.

He was commenting on a case in Tongkang Pechah, Batu Pahat recently when a student was hurt in the knee after he was assaulted by 12 students in the classroom.
